It all started in the 4-1 home defeat against Sunderland in the Premier League last Tuesday and it has continued against Swindon Town in the FA Cup yesterday.
The Latics took the lead in the game as Callum McManaman proved his worth to the first team following his return from a loan spell with Blackpool. The young striker both won the penalty, and converted after Ben atson's effort hit the post.
The lead however was short lived. After an embarassing defensive error from Adrian Lopez that went unpunished, Swindon continued to attack and after three notable efforts on Al-Habsi's goal, Alan Connell headed the equaliser.
Matters went from bad to worse for Martinez as his side conceeded what turned out to be the winner after 76 minuted when Paul Benson deflected Matt Ritchie's shot into Al-Habsi's goal.
The defeat was further embarassment for the Latics in 2012 who have started the year poorly.
The theory doing the rounds is that the players only know how to perform in the big games, i.e. Liverpool and Chelsea, as they are in the shop window.
When the camera's are away from the team, they lack the respect for the manager, supporters, and club, and simply go through the motions. Just a theory, but there are too many players hiding at the minute.
Here is the reaction of the two managers.
Roberto Martinez
Obviously the result was disappointing, the winning goal is clearly offside, and we didn't get the outcome we were looking for. But in many ways I was happy with the youngsters and the way they adapted to the game.
It was really exciting to see Callum back in the side and showing what a good footballer he is becoming. He took his goal really well, he looked sharp and he showed some good quality in his 1v1 situations.
I also thought Jordan adapted well to his first start for the senior side, and he did his cause the world of good as well.
The FA Cup is a unique opportunity to have a look at a lot of players who haven't played a lot of football this season and to see how the youngsters are developing.
It helps to show me who is ready and who can help us in the second half of the season to secure our main aim which is to ensure safety in the Premier League.
I have a lot more information about how the whole squad is shaping up, and what we need to do in this transfer window to take us through to the end of the season.
Paolo Di Canio
My lads today deserve something from the club - to do something and put their names in the stadium forever. I don't want a big statue. Maybe just a small plaque with all their names.
There is no doubt we deserved to win. It is the best moment of my life. Today they did show the dream can come true. We needed to limit Wigan's chances to get through and we did that well apart from the accident for the penalty.
This is something special - an amazing performance against a team three divisions above us. The players have been fantastic because to play under me is difficult.
