Thomspon and Mellor on Boro victory

Last updated : 23 January 2006 By Paul Farrington
Both Thompson and Mellor scored on their debuts, Mellor's last minute strike proving to be the winner.

23 year old Mellor said: "It was a perfect start for myself, especially getting the winning goal. Unfortunately we lost a two goal to set pieces which we are a bit upset about.

"I had a couple of other offers but once I knew that Wigan were interested, obviously having a young English manager who is highly spoken of, I was quite keen to come and learn some things from him.

"I have been out for over a year and I am pleased that Jewell has gambled on me and hopefully I can repay him by getting more goals. I had tendonitis in both knees, and I've been resting and doing a few precautions but it had to be operated on and I have been in rehab ever since.

"I don't know what the injury entails for me, hopefully it is all behind me. I haven't felt anything for a good month so I hope it continues."

While 28 year old midfielder Thompson added: said "It was a really pleasing debut, and it was nice to score a goal although it was more important to win. Everyone is delighted because I think we really deserved it.

"I'm fit now and have been for a long time, but I just haven't been getting a game at Blackburn. This is a great opportunity to try and kick start my career because it's hit the rocks a little bit due to injury.

The 28-year also old commented on his first impressions on the club, "The first thing I noticed here was the team spirit, it's amazing, I've never seen anything like it in my life.

"I can see why they've done so well this season, because they want to work for each other, graft for each other and fight for each other. It is really pleasing for me to come into a team like that."
