Opinion: Untimely defeat reminder of work still to do

With Q.P.R. and Blackburn both managing good home wins the pressure was well and truely crancked up another notch at the foot of the table.

The weekend's result saw the demise of Wolverhampton Wanderers who were mathematically relegated. A further illustration of the importance of the wins experienced over the past few weeks.

Fulham would appear to have been a game too far for the Latics who looked tired and sluggish against a Cottagers side with little or nothing to play for.

Many pundits are hanging their hat on the Latics who still have a home game with Wolves on the final day of the season whilst Q.P.R. face Manchester City away and Blackburn face the trip to Stamford Bridge.

At the same time it would be unwise to let things run to the last day when a result over Newcastle would put the Latics in the box seat going into the visit to Ewood Park.

Then there is local rivals Bolton Wanderers who despite being in the bottom three have a game in hand over those above them.

It is incrediably close to call and only those with the desire to survive will manage it.

Displays over recent weeks and months have shown that there is more than enough fight within the dressing room at the DW Stadium.

The visit of Newcastle to the DW Stadium will be very difficult. The Magpies have been in special form for the duration of the season and possess a particularly potent front two.

If we're going to be able to get anything the level of performance is going to have to be up there with that achieved in the recent remarkable run of result that included victories over Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool.

With just three games of the season to go, there is no better time to get three straight victories.

We're on the final straight and those points achieved against the big boys will count for nothing if we do not perform in the final 270 minutes of the season.

More than ever this is the time to be counted and show just what Wigan Athletic are made of.

Believe.
