And so to the final month of the season. Wigan took on Arsenal in the last
French Letter: Chimbonda shows his greedy side
ever game at Highbury. I had managed to get a ticket thanks to a family friend (lowergrounder off the message board).

Another great day out and Wigan proved they weren't just there for the occasion as David Thompson's free kick put us 2-1 up, but Arsenal took control and won the game 4-2 with a Thierry Henry hat-trick.

The win took them above rivals Tottenham and into the Champions League places. A great day was marred for Wigan fans though, by the actions of a certain Pascal Chimbonda.

Mr Chimbonda saw fit to hand in a written transfer request to manager Paul Jewell whilst still in his kit and boots. PJ hit the roof. Pascal went from hero to zero in Wigan fans eyes.

How can someone be so disrespectful to the club that dragged him from nowhere when no one else would give him a chance? Loyalty in sport? DEAD. Dave Whelan later came out and said he would not leave for less than 6 million.

In the weeks that followed Stephane Henchoz and David Thompson were released by Latics and Wigan had an £8.5 million bid accepted for England striker Andy Johnson.

Bolton and Everton joined the hunt and the Crystal Palace front man opted to go to Goodison Park. Speculation grew regarding the future of Pascal Chimbonda with Bayern Munich, Man United and Spurs all interested.

Jason Roberts left the club after over two years of loyal service, he signed for Blackburn Rovers. Wigan brought in goalkeeper Chris Kirkland in a loan move with a view to a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace defensive duo Fitz Hall and Emerson Boyce joined the Latics. Wigan also brought in Dutch midfielder Denny Landzaat from AZ alkmaar. Polish youngster Thomas Cwyka joined the club.

Wigan also tried to re-sign Nathan Ellington from West Brom but the two clubs could not agree on a fee. Damien Francis departed for Watford after a disappointing season at the JJB.

Wigan also completed the £5.5 million signing of Emile Heskey from Birmingham City, a record transfer fee paid by the club.
