Martinez has complained that the Sunderland game on Tuesday was one game too far for his Latics team who were defeated 4-1 in front of a frustrated home crowd.

Momo Diame and Conor sammon were rested for hte fixture and both players are likely to be rested again for this weekend's trip to Swindon.

Speaking about the fixture pile up over Christmas, and the possiblity of giving fringe players an opportunity in the FA Cup, Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post: “Tuesday night was a game too many for a number of the players, and it’s important we refresh ourselves and share the responsibility for bouncing back at Swindon.”

The game is likely to be used as an exercise for Martinez to learn more about his fringe players. Shaun Maloney, Hendry Thomas, Adrian Lopez and Nouha Dicko all tipped for an appearance.

Chief at the top of the list for Martinez to learn about is Callum McManaman who has spent the past three momths on loan with Blackpool.

“Callum is back now and we’re all looking forward to him being available for the FA Cup campaign,” Martinez told the Evening Post.

“It’s obvious he has enjoyed his time with Blackpool and we’re looking forward to reaping the benefits over the coming weeks.

“Callum has grown so much during the last few months – he’s a completely different player from the one we sent to Blackpool, which we hoped would be the case.

“He has played a really big role for a top Championship club, which was always going to help him progress in his career.

“He comes back to us as a fresh player, and now it’s all about how we can integrate him back into the squad and how he responds to the challenge."

There is speculation that Hugo Rodallega could start the game as he looks to build on the goal he scored against Sunderland, the Columbian's first of the season.

“It’s always great to see Hugo scoring goals and, now he’s off the mark, hopefully it will be the first of many,” Martinez added.

“Hugo is a confidence player and we need him to have a big say in what we’re trying to do.”

Swindon meanwhile are flying high in League Two under flambouyant manager Paolo Di Canio. A bumper home crowd is expeted for the fixture as the Robins look to produce an upset.

Tickets for away fans are available on the gate for those wishing to travel.
