The £1million signing from Crystal Palace started the season poorly, but came into his own when moved into the centre to solve Wigan's injury crisis.
The blow comes at the worst possible time, with Fitz Hal suspended, Arjan De Zeeuw still a while off full fitness and Granqvist unknown.
And with crucial games coming up, Jewell hopes someone else will take Boyce's place and takes their chance with both hands.
His manager Paul Jewell said: "It's a shame for Boycey, who has been magnificent this season, but he's the sort of lad who will come back at the earliest possible opportunity, I'm confident of that. It gives somebody else an opportunity now, that's the nature of football!"
