Bruce: Bolton game is vital

With just three points separating the sides a victory would see the Latics jump six points clear of the relegation zone.

Bruce is quoted in the Manchester Evennig News: "Our level of performance, especially in home games, has been excellent. We proved that against Arsenal who are one of the best teams in Europe. We matched them in every department.

"Drawing against Arsenal is a massive bonus before we play Bolton for what's going to be a Cup final. This is a huge fixture because matches with other clubs around us in the table are the deciders.

"We are now up to 13th in the Premiership and I wish the season was over now but to go from second bottom to 13th in just a matter of months means we've done extremely well.

"We've taken 20 points from 15 games since I took charge and I've always been a firm believer in the theory that if a club takes a point a game then they do stay up. We are ahead of schedule and the signs are there that we are a decent team.

"It's fair to say the defence needs a big pat on the back because they've given us a platform on which to build on.

"They have looked very solid and well organised but they've been getting some good protection from the lads in midfield. Wilson Palacios and Michael Brown were excellent against Arsenal.

"I know Brown has had his critics but I must say he has been absolutely terrific for me and we are in there with a great chance and we now look forward to taking on Bolton."

Meanwhile, Emile Heskey has not broken a bone in his foot. The striker had a scan today and the results came back all clear.

Whilst Latics reserves also beat Everton reserves 2-1 away from home. The goalscorers were Julius Aghahowa and Tomasz Cywka.
