The dynamic midfielder could equal the record in the home game with Newcastle in October and could make it 118, beating the record, away to Aston Villa in the game after.

Jimmy told the club's official website: "Footballers are very superstitious and therefore I'm a little bit nervous talking about breaking this record when I'm so close to it. It's not something I'd have ever dreamed about when I came here, but I'd be lying now if I said it wasn't in the back of my mind.

"I suppose it just shows what a great time I've had at Wigan since joining, they really have been the best days of my career my a country mile. I never saw Colin Methven play but some Latics fans that live in my street have told me he was a complete legend, the 'daddy' of his time. If, and I'm touching wood while I say this, IF I equal or break the record it will mean a lot to me."
