Caldwell earns point in first game

Gary Caldwell earned a point in his first game in charge of Wigan Athletic away at Fulham on Friday night.

The 32-year old became the youngest manager in the Football League when he was appointed on Tuesday, but earned a credible result in his first test.

Jermaine Pennant scored another stunning free kick and Jason Pearce scored an equaliser from a corner kick as Latics drew 2-2 at Craven Cottage.

Caldwell's men were forced to battle back after going behind twice in the game thanks to quality finishes from Fulham striker partnership Matt Smith and Ross McCormack.

However, the result was not the only positive from a Wigan point of view. It was the performance that caught the eye and pleased a lot of the travelling fans.

The new boss and new Chairman both insisted they wanted to return to the 'Wigan Way', a passing style of play implemented by former manager Roberto Martinez.

Those ideas were certainly on display in last night's match in West London, as Wigan dominated to possession, 62% compared to the Cottagers 38%, with around 640 passes being completed.

There's still a lot to work on and a lot to improve, but their is definitely something to work with for Caldwell and a structure finally seems to be in place.
