The news comes in today's Wigan Evening Post as the Scotland international defender has been assisting Graham Barrow and Eric Black with training affairs over the last few weeks.
“I’ve been helping Graham (Barrow) and Eric (Black) this week,” said Caldwell. “They’ve asked me to help with certain things and I’m really grateful. If I can help in any way I will.
“Looking to the future, being manager of this football club is certainly something I’d love to do – but it’s not for me just now.
In the meantime, I’ll support Graham as much as I can and I believe he can lead this club out of this rough period.”
Former Norwich City boss Chris Hughton is the current bookies favourite but a good outside shout would be Tony Mowbray.
Formerly Middlesbrough and West Brom manager the 50 year old has a good record of achieving quality football on a tight budget.
