The marmite man is either loved or stronglt disliked by varying sections of the Wigan support. Strong cases can be made for those sitting on either side of the fence.

With his contract set to expire in the summer the former Barcelona and Espanyol midfielder has signed a two year extension until the summer of 2014.

Gomez is delighted to have committed his future to the club. He told the club's official website: "I would like to thank everyone at the club for making me feel welcome here.

“I feel I can keep improving, and now I want to keep focusing on my game and do all I can to finish the season strongly and keep our Premier League status.”

Meanwhile manager Roberto Martinez was equally pleased. He said: “We are delighted Jordi has committed himself to our football club. He is our top goal-scorer this season and his vision has provided us with a real playmaking role.

“He has accumulated a fantastic experience in the Premier League and, with potential offers waiting for him in the summer, it is a fantastic gesture towards the football club that he has chosen to commit to Wigan Athletic at this crucial moment.”

The news means there is no doubt supporters that will remain divided on the Gomez issue for a further two more years.
