Kirkland has seemingly fallen out of favour with the Latics boss after a string of impressive displays from Bolton loanee, Ali Al-Habsi.
Now it would seem the 29 year old is set for a move to his home town club, Leicester City, where he will be re-united with former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson.
The move was first proposed last weekend but delayed when Kirkland picked up a virus. Latics manager Roberto Martinez told the Evening Post: "Now he is over the bug, we will look into what we can do to help him enjoy his football.
"He needs to be playing and being able to maintain that sharpness. That is important, because we will need him to be ready whenever he gets an opportunity to play for Wigan."
The Latics will be left with Mike Pollitt as cover for Al-Habsi after the veteran goalkeeper has receovered from his recentelbow operation. Pollitt played in the reserves 3-0 victory over Bolton yesterday.
Meanwhile, Lee Nicholls remains on loan with Hartlepool United. The 18 year old England under 19 international was on the bench for their recent game with Tranmere.
