The Latics have struggled this season and have mustered just one win in eight games under Mackay.
With the league position looking perilous a quick turnaround is needed and Mackay is hoping to add two new faces this week to help.
“Obviously that’s something we’re trying to make happen,” he said. "You need a fair wind for that to happen, but it is something I will be trying to do - to get one, if not two, in this week.
“We need to freshen things up and, if we can get the right players in, of quality, then we will try to do that. Mr Whelan is allowing that to happen, he’s been very positive as far as that’s concerned.”
At the moment it is unclear who will be joining the club but both new faces are believed to be attacking players joining on a loan basis until the end of the season.
Nick Powell's return to Manchester United from Leicester has seen rumours surface that the former Crewe man is set to re-sign at the DW Stadium after a successful loan spell last season.
