The striker/midfielder was picked against Everton, and missed two guilt edged chances. Jewell said: "People can have their differences with the club or with me. I don't really care. He is paid by us to play for us.
"We both know each other well enough, and if he tries his best, then (there is) not a problem. If he doesn't, he's got a problem."
Jewell also insisted it would take a bid of huge proportions to persuade him to sell a player who has been with Jewell since his first season in charge.
He added: "As far as I'm concerned that is not true," Jewell told the Wigan Evening Post.
"Unless we get an offer which makes you jump out of your seat, Lee stays here."
