Owen of course chose a move to Newcastle United after Liverpool wouldn't stump up £16 million for a player who cost just £8 million a year ago.

Lets face it, Newcastle paid over the odds to rule out Liverpool, the club where Michael's heart will always be.

speaking about Wigan's bid, the Dave Whelan said: "Our move was not a publicity stunt. I was even prepared to put a clause in that would allow him to move at Christmas.

"Michael rang to say thanks for trying to sign him. He joined Newcastle but we did everything in our power to try to bring him to The JJB Stadium.

"Ringing up was a wonderful gesture. He made time to speak to me once he made it clear he was going to Tyneside."
