And even though a couple more pre-transfer deadline moves failed to come off, Jewell is pleased with the choice of players he has available for the next four months.
Nine signings have been made since promotion last May, and coupled with eight departures, the squad has a much changed look about it.
Jewell said: "I'm pretty relieved the transfer window is shut now because it means we can all get on with concentrating on what really matters – football.
"The squad of players I have is top-drawer and they are more than good enough not only to survive at this level but to compete as well.
"We are a very young club in the grand scheme of things, and in terms of the Premiership we are infants.
"It was never going to be the case that established stars would be beating down our door, but already I'm sensing opinions on Wigan Athletic are changing with the exposure we're getting.
"Come the January transfer window, when we'll have played even more games at this level, I'm confident those perceptions will be even better.
"Rome wasn't built in a day and that applies to us and our recruitment.
"The signing of David Connolly answers the main area of concern – getting another striker in.
"It means we now have Connolly, Jason Roberts, Henri Camara, Lee McCulloch and Andreas Johansson who can play in an attacking role."
The Latics squad were training today before having a free weekend due to the international fixtures.
Three players were absent – Leighton Baines and Ryan Taylor are with the England Under-21 squad and Graham Kavanagh was flying out to Dublin today to join up with the Republic of Ireland party.
Baines and Taylor were hoping to play a part against Wales in Wrexham tonight having both got late call-ups from coach Peter Taylor.
And they won't be back in Wigan until the middle of next week with England also away in Germany on Tuesday.
The Republic of Ireland tackle France in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, and Kavanagh expects to be on the bench.
Lee McCulloch dropped out of the Scotland squad earlier in the week in order to rest a strained medial ligament in his knee.
