The former Crewe striker is presently on loan with the Latics from Cardiff City and Uwe Rosler has hinted at a possible summer permenant switch.
The move was initially suggested as a boost for both clubs with Maynard needing games to boost his fitness and the Latics desperate for a goalscorer.
Now Rosler has dropped a hint that he may be interested in making a permenant addition to the Latics squad, although it is far too early to talk about it.
Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Rosler said: "It's far too early to talk about what may or may not happen in the summer.
"I said from day one that Nicky needs time, and I spoke to both him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer abou that. We were all in agreement about what we are tring to achieve with this loan spell.
"Nicky is very patient and has put in a lot of hard work on the training ground. In ost cases that has been more than anyone else, because he has had to play catch up after not playing for such a long time.
"I always said that in the end he would get his rewards, and on Tuesday night that process started.
"I cannot talk about the future, but I can say that I am enjoying working with him. I told the chairman when we signed him that Nicky can be a very important player for us in terms of giving us the goals we need, and he is proving me right."
The striker will be rested this weekend as part of Maynard's loan agreement from Cardiff is that he will not face his parent club.
