The former Everton trainee has been in impressive form for the Latics this season and is consistently being targeted by opposition defenders for special treatment.
Speaking about the issue to the Wigan Evening Post and Rosler said: “Callum is a special player, and that continues to be the case in every game he is playing at the moment.
“Was it three or four players who were booked by hacking him down? When he gets the ball and runs at people, it seems they don’t even try and get the ball off him – they try and take him out of the game.
“If that continues, I am worried that one day we will lose this special player. For me, some of the fouls were borderline straight red cards.
“If he hadn’t jumped out of the way on a couple of occasions, he would not have finished the game – and it cannot continue like this.
“I thought the referee did well today, but in general there has to be a responsibility from referees to give this kid some protection.”
