Sharpe sacks Malky Mackay

The vast majority of Wigan Athletic fans finally got what they wanted yesterday as Malky Mackay was sacked.

The Scotsman was relieved of his duties by new the club's new Chairman David Sharpe, despite the 23-year old saying Mackay's job was safe just weeks earlier.

The decision came after a 2-0 home defeat to Derby County, where some fans expressed their feelings towards another poor team selection from their manager. As well as some substitutions that seemed to lack common sense.

Some fans attempted to confront Mackay and even threw their season tickets into the dugout area. It's hardly surprising when our best performer in recent weeks, Jermaine Pennant, was sat on the bench.

Also, he persisted with Leon Clarke and Marc-Antoine Fortune up front who have scored one goal between them in around four months. Martyn Waghorn continued to bench warm with poacher Billy McKay not even in the squad on Saturday.

These decisions are compiled with Mackay's record as manager (P 24, W 5, D 4, L 15), which included earning only 19 points from a possible 72; with not a single home win in five months.

It's been a long time coming, many Latics will be happy with the decision but they will feel it's too little too late. Relegation to League One is all but confirmed.

Two wins in two years at the DW Stadium with Derby, Steve McLaren has assisted in the departure of two Wigan managers (Owen Coyle and Malky Mackay).

Ironic really, considering he should have been offered the Wigan job only last year.
