In that campaign, Australia's World Cup campaign limited Skoko's involvment to a handful of games, despite showing much promise.
He has now decided to concentrate on club football, wanting to avoid another club v country row.
Skoko won't be taking part in the upcoming Asia Cup, with the friendly against Argentina likely to be his last appearance for Australia.
He said: "After the World Cup last year I wanted to put more focus on my club football. If I want to make a good go of my career at Wigan, I'll have to let some things in the national team go.
"It's getting to the point where I've had enough and I'll probably be looking to retire."
His 28 appearances last term persuaded Hutchings to offer him a one-year contract, but Skoko could be tempted to look elsewhere as he could fall down the pecking order if the Wigan manager signs new midfielders.
Hutch' is expected to miss out on Sheffield Uniteds Phil Jagielka, who prefers a move to Everton. Meanwhile, Gavin McCann has opted to sign for Sammy Lee's Bolton.
