Scotland international Caldwell put in a stirlnig performance on the Dutch striker who wasn't given a sniff of goal for the duration of the game.

At the final whistle van Persie refused to shake the hand of his marker Caldwell and theLatics captain has been left disappointed by the actions of the Arsenal striker.

Speaking to the press, Caldwell said: "I felt the it was unnecessary, to be at a great club like Arsenal you have to be a bad loser.

"But I think you also have to have a bit of dignity at the end. When we got beat 4-0 at the DW Stadium, I shook everybody's hand and I expect the same back.

"I went to shake his hand and he threw me away which is disappointing. It was all much about nothing. You lose games and you're bitterly disappointed and you show than in a manner of different ways.

"But he is a fantastic player - I actually voted him for player of the year and I'm sure he will win that."

The Latics have won four of their last five games including victories over Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

A trip to Craven Cottage is on hte cards this weekend as Roberto Martinez and his team look to sew up survival before the final day.
