The 24 year old forward is out of contract with Leicester City in the summer and is playing for his future with the Latics.
Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Waghorn said: "I had a good chat to the gaffer before I signed, and he told me exactly what his plans are, what he wants from me and what I need to do.
"I'm out of contract thsi summer so I need to prove to myself I can play at this level and beyond, and to the manager for bringing me here.
"I just want to work myself into the gaffer's plans and we'll take it from there. If I can play well here and score a few goals, the I'd be silly to look elsewhere."
Latics manager Uwe Rosler has admitted that Waghorn has impressed in training this week and is pushing for a place in the starting line up against Huddersfield today.
"Martyn has trained exceelently and will be involved in the squad," said Rosler. "We can already see his quality and what he can bring to the team."
