The former Leicester City forward suffered a freak training ground shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined for the last month.
With the Latics lacking firepower new manager Malky Mackay is expected to turn to Waghorn to lead the front line alongside Marc Antoine Fortune with an optimistic return to two strikers.
Speaking about his recent spell on the sidelines Waghorn told the Wigan Evening Post: “It’s annoying I’ve not been able to show the new manager what I can do. “It’s been difficult, but it’s up to me to keep working hard and get myself back ready to play again.
“I’ve been in the gym every day, on the bike and doing the running, I’ve just had to keep the shoulder stable.
“My fitness hasn’t suffered much, it’s just the match sharpness I’ll be needing.”
The shoulder injruy suffered by Waghorn is healing and the striker believes he is less than a week away from a return to fitness.
“I’m only around a week or so away, and the games are coming thick and fast now and I can’t wait to get back in there," he added.
“I got the injury during the international break so I was lucky that there was no game for the first two weeks anyway.
“It was an innocuous challenge in training, I’ve tripped over and landed on my shoulder and done myself some damage."
