With the World Cup in full flow the attention has turned from Uwe Rosler's transfer activity and towards the carnival of football in Brazil.
However Whelan has revealed to the Wigan Observer that the club are close to making another addition following a discussion between himself and manager Uwe Rosler.
"We've been chatting about next season, and I have to say things are really taking shape," said Whelan. "Uwe's looking to bring in a striker, and he thinks he's got one.
"We're looking to bring in three or four players in total. That should do us for next season.
"I've had a meeting with Uwe and he's put on the table what he's looking for and I've backed him on most of it.
"He's like Roberto [Martinez], he's busy every single day from 7am to 11pm - he's just a brilliant manager."
At the moment the identity of the striker is unknown and Middlesbrough's Lukas Jutkiewicz has been the subject to interest from Derby County.
