Latics boss Paul Jewell said: "We got through the Bristol game injury-free apart from Nathan's shoulder and we'll have to see the extent of that before we know whether he will be ready for Colchester.
"Hopefully it is not too serious and we can get him back in the frame for the weekend ahead.
"Luckily we have got a free week and that gives him extra time to recover.
"To be fair, when you are sitting at the top of the league you don't tend to pick up too many injuries because nobody wants to miss any football matches."
Everton have shown a keen interest in Ellington this season with Toffees' boss David Moyes running the rule over the Wigan forward on several occasions and the Premiership club were represented again at Ashton Gate.
But Jewell says he doesn't anticipate any transfer activity – either in or out – before the window closes on January 31.
He added: "It's very quiet here and although we are top of the league and doing very well we don't expect to sign any new faces.
"We are also in the fortunate position of not having to sell any of our players because we have the financial backing in place at the club and we don't need to sell.
"We have not got the biggest squad in the league here but I am happy with the quality of the players and they have done a good job for me this season."
Friday's win in the West Country was Latics' 10th league win in a row and extended their unbeaten run in Division Two to 20 games – a record which stretches back to the end of August when they lost 1-0 to next Saturday's opponents Colchester at Layer Road.
That has left Wigan 12 points clear of nearest rivals Crewe, Cardiff and Oldham as their title charge gathers further momentum.
Meanwhile, Neil Roberts' last minute caution at Ashton Gate means the Welsh international striker will be ruled out of Wigan's league game at Swindon Town on Saturday week.
Roberts, who replaced the injured Ellington, has collected five yellow cards this season and that means he lands an automatic one-game ban.
Wigan Reserves are in action against Wrexham at the Racecourse tomorrow (2pm).
The second string home fixture against Blackpool, postponed last week, has been rearranged for Robin Park on April 9.
