Jewell eyes January sales

The search has already started for potential recruits in January with games all over Europe being monitored by Latics scouts.

By then, Jewell hopes the club will have started putting down roots in the Premiership so that players are attracted by a move to the JJB Stadium.

Even with nine new signings on board since the summer, he knows more
quality needs to be added for the second stage of the season.

Jewell told the Evening Post: "If we can have a decent run up until Christmas then we become a better draw for players.

"If I was a player and had a choice of going to a top established club or one which was new to the league, I know which one I'd join.

"That is what we are up against and we have to work hard to establish ourselves as a Premier League club.

"We are operating in a difficult market for transfers as clubs don't want to let their best players go.

"Between now and January, we need to get ourselves abroad every weekend to watch games and see who is available.

"Bill Green (football co- ordinator) and David Hamilton (chief scout) are away this weekend in Europe and it's important we know the market a little bit better.

"By January, we have to make sure we know about everyone out there."

Jewell was stung by criticism by a section of fans about a perceived lack of transfer activity leading up to last week's deadline.

David Connolly turned out to be the only late signing, but it wasn't for the lack of trying.

Jewell said: "We tried exceptionally hard to get more players in and I was disappointed with one or two people's reaction and arrogant comments about us.

"On teletext, there was a section written by a fan saying it was a typical week in the life of Wigan Athletic.

"Well it must be a terrible week for the club when we're in the Premiership for the first time, have four players away on international duty and are getting record crowds.

"We were closer than most people think to getting Michael Owen.

"The chairman spoke to the player and his agent, and we didn't do it for publicity, we really did want him.

"We tried to get Fatih Tekke from Turkey, offering £5m for him, and we offered 7m euros for Johan Elmander at Brondby.

"They'd just been knocked out of the Champions League but are now in the UEFA Cup, so they didn't want to sell him.

"They were players we wanted to get in as well as David Connolly – he wasn't an after-thought when we couldn't get them.

"We tried for Dean Windass but contrary to reports we didn't go back with a second bid of £600,000 – we made one bid of £350,000.

"At the moment, we are trying to get Josep Guardiola.

"I spoke to him last Wednesday and hoped to have him over here last Friday, but as with a lot of deals involving foreign players, so many agents got involved.

"If it happens, it happens, and it will do if the boy wants to come, which he does.

"He is a fantastic player and would add something different to what we already have."

Meanwhile, Henri Camara has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring strain in the hope of being fit for Saturday's trip to West Brom.

Jewell said: "Henri had his first really tough session yesterday but we have to be careful. Having nursed him through this far, we don't want the hamstring going again."
