He was on the mark after just one minute and 39 seconds of Saturday's clash, with Matt Jackson and Scott Green completing the scoring.
Liddell now sits out the next three games as a result of his sending off at Tranmere 13 days ago, starting with Wednesday night's Worthington Cup tie with West Brom.
His ban also takes in Saturday's home game with leaders Cardiff and the trip to Plymouth on October 12.
Lidell said: "It was sweet to score against Barnsley, but it didn't make my season.
"What will make my season is if I score loads more goals and we win promotion.
"It's nice to score against anyone, I don't care who's net it goes into.
The result at Oakwell was never in doubt once Liddell had opened the scoring with Jackson heading the second with just 11 minutes on the clock.
Green added the third with a 65th minute header, before Kevin Betsy gave the scoreline a small degree of respectability with a consolation soon afterwards.
Liddell felt the margain of victory should have been much greater and thought Wigan were worthy winners.
Liddell added: "We were the better side by far and really should have scored more than three goals.
"Barnsley are struggling at the moment, and we know what that is like from last season.
"The manager stressed beforehand about making a good start, and we got the perfect start.
"Barnsley didn't really push after us and I thought we were worty winners.
"I still don't think we have hit top form, because we can play better and score more goals."
Manager Paul Jewell said: "We have done all right so far this season, and I hope I will be saying similar things at the end.
"No medals, championships or promotions are won in September and we have to keep on working and improving.
"We started off really well against Barnsley and wanted to take the game to them because they have been struggling.
"We got the goal in the first minute and it was good for Andy (Liddell) to score it.
"Unfortunately, Lids is suspended now for three games, but that is part and parcel of football. Neil Roberts will come in on Wednesday and we'll take it from there."
Nathan Ellington and Scott Green picked up minor injuries on Saturday but are expected to be fit to face the Baggies.
