Paper Talk: Easy does it

Their 2-0 win at Aston Villa lifted them to the dizzy heights of fourth place and already almost halfway to the 40-point safety mark with only nine games played.

But Jewell still sees survival as their realistic aim, although even the down-to-earth manager accepts that may change in the coming months.

An own goal from Aaron Hughes gifted Latics a first-half lead on Saturday.

Then Alan Mahon made sure of the three points with a wonderful 25-yard strike seven minutes from time.

They are now looking down from their lofty perch at Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Jewell said: "It's nice to be in the position we are but our ambition is still to stay in this league.

"I would like to be able to think that as the season goes on, we might change that target.

"But just at the moment, we are only focusing on being in the Premiership next year.

"That is what we want to do, that is the goal to aim for and nothing has changed despite the good run we're on.

"I can't hide the fact I'm pleased with how things are going, with us having a good mix of experienced players, pace and hunger in the squad.

"Put the three of them together and at the moment, we are doing okay.

"We know we have to perform to our optimum almost every match in order to get a result, and that takes an awful lot out of us.

"But the players are fit, and are full of desire and determination.

"We're enjoying ourselves in the Premiership, and it's not a case of the test coming when injuries and suspensions hit, the test comes every Saturday.

"I think we've adapted well to the league so far, and while I can't answer if other people are taking us seriously, we are taking ourselves pretty seriously."

Jewell felt Latics were full value for the win in the Midlands despite having to ride their luck at times in the first half.

And he was quick to point out the squad wasn't at full strength.

Lee McCulloch was ruled out through suspension, David Connolly sidelined because of a hamstring injury, while Jason Roberts limped out of the action with more than 20 minutes left after straining a muscle at the top of his leg.

Jewell said: "In the first 25 minutes we didn't play particularly well.

"Once we went in front, we got a foothold in the game and created some good chances in the second half.

"Really we should have won more comfortably than we did.

"John Filan had to make a couple of saves in the first half but wasn't really troubled in the second half.

"Henri Camara and Jason Roberts had chances to put the game to bed earlier than we did, and when they didn't take them, you wondered whether we'd pay for it.

"But one thing we do is break well, and our second goal was quality from that point of view.

"It was a great strike from Alan Mahon and he has that in his locker.

"With Lee McCulloch out suspended and Alan coming in, it showed that one player's misfortune can be a chance for someone else."

Latics were assessing the fitness of Roberts this morning, although that was with Saturday's game against Fulham in mind rather than tomorrow night's visit of Watford in the Carling Cup.

Jewell will ring the changes for the clash with the Hornets, giving a run to the players who have been on the fringes of the team so far this season.
