Paper Talk: Go with Jo

Paul Jewell hopes to bring the ex-Barcelona ace to the JJB Stadium in the next few days to give the Premiership newcomers more experience.

Although the transfer window is closed until January, Latics would be allowed to sign 34-year-old Guardiola as he is not attached to a club.

Martinez, who spent six years at Wigan, told the Evening Post: "Pep Guardiola is an unbelievable player and if Latics did manage to sign him, it would show how far they have come.

"His record is second to none and when he was at Barcelona, he was the best player with the ball at his feet.

"He's a cultured midfielder who sits in front of the back four and reads a game in an incredible way.

"Guardiola is not a player who is going to give you aggression and isn't a tackler, but he knows how to dictate the tempo of a game and his range of passing is excellent.

"He was a vital member of Barcelona's 'Dream Team' under Johan Cruyff which won three Spanish titles, the European Cup at Wembley and changed the way football was played in Spain.

"Before then the football could be quite negative, but Barcelona began to use a style where they kept hold of the ball and tried to attack all the time.

"It was the best Barcelona team for 50 or 60 years and Guardiola was at the heart of it, making things happen. He really would be a great signing for Wigan if they can make it happen.

"Although he is now 34, he can still have a massive influence on a game and I know he's always wanted to finish his career in the Premiership.

"When he left Barcelona in 2001, there was talk of Manchester United signing him but he ended up going to Italy to play for Brescia and Roma.

"He's one of the best players Barcelona have produced, he was the master, and I'm sure Wigan fans would love to see him sign.

"It would be something special if he could finish his career at Wigan."

Guardiola has already spoken with Jewell about a possible deal, although it could be later in the week before there is any movement.

He's a free agent having left Al-Ahli in Qatar at the end of last season, while he turned down Manchester City in the summer after they only offered him a six-month contract.

Recovering

Were he to sign, it would strengthen a midfield already containing Jimmy Bullard, Damien Francis, Graham Kavanagh and Josip Skoko.

Meanwhile, Latics were hoping for some good news this week on the injury front ahead of Saturday's visit to West Brom.

Henri Camara is battling to recover from a hamstring strain which has already kept him out of the games against Charlton and Sunderland.

But the pressure has been eased slightly by the signing of David Connolly, and it might be Camara is eased back into action via the substitutes' bench at The Hawthorns.

The other main injury worry is Lee McCulloch – the midfielder's only appearance this season against Sunderland was only made possible by three pain killing injections in his knee.
