Latics have seven players away on national service and they aren't all due back in Wigan until the eve of Newcastle's visit to the JJB Stadium a week on Saturday.
In that time, Jewell hopes they remain injury-free, while trying to formulate a plan to keep Alan Shearer and Michael Owen under control with the players left at his disposal.
The international players will be scattered far and wide, with striker Henri Camara having the furthest to travel for Senegal's game against Mali.
Graham Kavanagh and David Connolly are with the Republic of Ireland for their World Cup qualifiers in Cyprus on Saturday and against Switzerland in Dublin next Wednesday.
It's qualifying duty too for Lee McCulloch, as the midfielder links up with the Scotland squad in Loch Lomand tonight ahead of the weekend clash with Belarus in Glasgow and next week's visit to Slovenia.
Leighton Baines and Ryan Taylor are in the England Under-21 party to face
Austria and Poland, although the pair fortunately having to travel no further than Leeds and Sheffield.
Josip Skoko was training with Australia in Holland this week before Sunday's friendly with Jamaica at Fulham's Craven Cottage.
In the cases of Camara, Kavanagh, Connolly and McCulloch, it's unlikely they'll be back training with Latics until a week on Friday.
Jewell said: "Having so many internationals is a double-edged sword.
"On the one hand, it disrupts preparations because we won't have them back until the Thursday or Friday before the Newcastle game.
"But on the other, it's a tremendous accolade for the club to have so many players representing their country.
"International football is something players strive for.
"I remember seeing Lee McCulloch's face when he was called up by Scotland for the first time, and it was the same for Leighton Baines and Ryan Taylor with the Under-21s.
"It charts the progress Wigan have made to have so many players on international duty and I want it to continue.
"But I suppose a small part of me wants to keep them in cotton wool at the training ground and not let them jet off to the middle of nowhere to play.
"We lost Henri Camara for a few weeks earlier in the season when he pulled his hamstring playing for Senegal.
"When they go off I always wish each of them well and tell them to come back in one piece ready to play for us."
Jewell welcomes the Premiership break despite Latics having built up a head of steam in the past month with four league wins and a draw in five games.
He said: "It's nice to have a little break because this is a tough league and there's an awful long way to go yet.
"We have players away but with the others we can get some good training into them and also give them a bit of time to rest."
Latics, meanwhile, have played down a report at the weekend linking out-of-favour winger Alan Mahon with a loan move away from the JJB.
After playing the opening two games of the season, he has been overlooked for Premiership duty since McCulloch's return from injury.
He featured against Bournemouth in the Carling Cup, but wasn't on the bench for the two league games since.
Any move would have to be on loan to a Football League club, and Jewell recently expressed a reluctance to lose any member of his squad until the January transfer window, when he is permitted to bring in a replacement.
