Paper Talk: Terrier Trail

The powerful centre-half has attracted a host of Premiership interest this season and Latics boss Paul Jewell has made two visits to watch the promising 21-year-old this term, including Monday's clash against his former club Bradford at Valley Parade.

Despite Wigan's most encouraging start to life in the Premier League, Jewell is likely to want to bolster his squad when the transfer window swings open in January and Clarke is definitely one for the future.

And Jewell is keen to recruit a younger defender as his current four choices are all at the veteran stage, so Clarke certainly fits the bill.

Huddersfield could be reluctant to sell, though, with Peter Jackson's side making a powerful Championship promotion charge.

Jackson said: "Nathan's a quality player and it's no surprise that clubs from the Premier League are looking at him.

"But he has only recently signed a new deal here and is committed to helping the club where he has grown up gain promotion and that's great."

Huddersfield could find it hard to say no, though, if Jewell follows up his growing interest with a substantial cash offer in January.

Jewell, meanwhile, will not have his full squad together until tomorrow morning, and won't have been sorry that Graham Kavanagh was an
unused sub as the Republic of Ireland failed to make the play-offs last night due to their 0-0 draw with Switzerland in Dublin.

And he has given an upbeat assessment of Lee McCulloch's chances of being fit to face Newcastle United in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off (12.45pm).

McCulloch returned to Wigan after Scotland's 1-0 defeat to Belarus on Saturday, a result that put an end to his country's slim World Cup qualification hopes, so missed last night's encouraging 3-0 win in Slovenia.

Jewell said: "Lee should be okay and he's responded to treatment over the past 24 hours so I'm confident he'll be involved against Newcastle."

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Grame Souness admits that the growing St James' Park injury-list is 'killing' Newcastle's season.

Souness says Nobby Solano, Kieron Dyer, Titus Bramble and Celestine Babayaro all look certain to miss the JJB clash.

"The whole thing is killing us and none of them will be ready for Wigan," groaned the former Blackburn and Liverpool manager.

"Titus is out with a hamstring injury – he has no chance – and neither has Babayaro because of a torn groin, so Robbie Elliott comes back into the frame.

"Dyer is still a couple of weeks away from a comeback.

"It's been a disaster for him and a disaster for us all season. Our injury list is frightening and it's not getting any better.

"Thankfully Craig Moore is training normally and Emre should be available for us at Wigan.

Stern

"But we're probably looking to use Emre off the bench on Saturday.

"Make no mistake, it will be a stern test for us at Wigan because they've made a great start and they've really shocked a few teams already."

But Michael Owen, who missed Newcastle's last outing at Portsmouth with a dead-leg, will almost certainly partner Alan Shearer.
