Paper Talk: Toon Alert

Latics are also four places higher up the table than Graeme Souness' side,
who have just started to recover from a slow start to the season.

But Jewell isn't getting carried away by his own team's good form and is ready to warn the players of the threat posed by the Magpies.

He has also jumped to the defence of opposite number Souness, a manager he spoke up for at a disciplinary hearing following his last visit to the JJB.

Souness was in charge of Blackburn and landed himself in hot water following an argument with the fourth official in a Worthington Cup tie.

Jewell said: "The Newcastle game will be a very tough one and you just need to have a look at their squad to see that.

"They've got Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and Shay Given, among others, internationals with so much experience.

"We are definitely second favourites on paper – although at least football isn't played on paper – and I'd imagine we will start many games this
season as underdogs.

"Newcastle are arguably one of top five clubs in the country despite the start they've made, so we have to remain totally focused.

"It should be a terrific game against them, with a big crowd and cracking atmosphere, and hopefully we can continue to make the progress we have been doing."

Jewell said it was stupid to hear calls for Souness' sacking so early in the campaign.

He said: "It was silly that Graeme was coming under pressure so early in the season, but that tends to happen these days at the big clubs.

"You look at David Moyes at Everton. He did a terrific job last season and was named as manager of the year.

"Now he is supposedly under pressure, and a similar thing happened to George Burley when he was in charge of Ipswich a few years ago.

"One season he guided them to a UEFA Cup place, the following year he was sacked.

"That's why I take no notice of what is written about me in the papers, whether it's good, bad or indifferent.

"I just do my job to the best of my ability, and the only guy I have to make sure I keep happy is the chairman.

"We have a good relationship, he trusts me to do my job and gives me the tools to do my job – I can't ask for any more.

"Everything I have asked for, he has backed me, I have no complaints about the chairman and hopefully he won't have any complaints about me."
