Paper Talk: World-Beaters

Latics today sit proudly in second place after Saturday's 1-0 win over Fulham, provided by Pascal Chimbonda heading an injury-time winner.

It was their fifth league win on the bounce, their seventh overall, and they have 22 points on the board after 10 games.

This is the second best start made to a Premiership campaign by a newly-promoted club, only Nottingham Forest bettering it with a 24-point haul from 10 games in the 1994/95 campaign.

Jewell said: "It's fantastic to be in the position we are.

"I didn't expect us to have 22 points yet, and I wouldn't be on my own in the rest of the world thinking that.

"Now we've got these points, we want to get even more so we can achieve our objectives this season."

Latics had to wait until the 92nd minute to grasp victory, with Chimbonda picking a timely moment to score his first goal in English football.

It earned the French right-back glowing praise from his boss and a standing ovation at the end from the supporters.

Jewell said: "Pascal is a breath of fresh air, he has been a great find for us.

"He's different, wears gloves in September, but he's brave, strong and athletic, and the supporters have taken him to their hearts.

"We worked hard to bring players of his calibre into the club, and after some people made disparaging remarks about some of our signings, I think we are proving one or two of them wrong.

"This was down to hard work as we didn't play too well, especially in the first half.

"Let's have it right, Fulham could have been out of sight after 15 minutes, but we rode our luck and came more into the game after half-time.

"They will be kicking themselves that they missed so many good chances, and in the end have been made to pay.

"No doubt there will be someone moaning about the referee as that tends to
happen every week.

"It's great isn't it? Every match we play, the ref is always biased towards Wigan!"

Jewell was referring to four decisions made by Andre Marriner in the first half, the Birmingham official turning down three penalty appeals by Fulham as well as not pulling John Filan up for handball outside the area.

"The way I saw the incident with John was that the ball nicked off his knee into his stomach and maybe it hit his hand," said Jewell.

"I think the law states it has to be intentional and that certainly wasn't intentional.

"There was a shout for a penalty when Arjan de Zeeuw was meant to have handled, but we had one like that in the second half. In my view, neither were penalties.

"Before the game I would have settled for 0-0.

"We only had one recognised striker and for the first 25 minutes, we were all over the place.

"The system we used (4-4-1-1) wasn't one which I think suits my team and the players we have got, but there was no other option.

"I couldn't wait to get them in at half-time as we needed to change one or two things.

"In the second half, we were better although I'm not sitting here thinking everything is rosy in the garden.

"I know we have to play better than we did in the first half, but remember that was a scratch side we had and a scratch system. We won the game and the players deserve credit for doing so."

* Latics have landed a home draw with Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

The game will be played the week starting November 28, in between the league games with Spurs and Liverpool.
