What the Papers Say

It seems every game now is a must-win game, and because of this result, Wigan might just have to do just that to have any hope of finishing in a UEFA Cup spot. Wigan's home form has been poor this season, and thanks to old man Teddy Sherringham setting up Reo-Coker to score the winner, this continued to be true.

Here is what a selection of the national newspapers had to say about West Ham's smash and grab at the JJB Stadium on saturday.

The Sun

Wigan 1 West Ham 2

Nigel Reo-Coker capped an incredible week for West Ham with an injury-time winner at the JJB.

The Hammers captain netted from close range two minutes into stoppage time to give the Hammers all three points.

Lee Mchulloch's rocket shot had given the Latics the lead at the end of the first half, but Marlon Harewood levelled six minutes after the break.

The Independent

Pardew stays the same in West Ham's year of changes

This time last year, West Ham left Wigan having won by the same scoreline and by a similar route, going behind after a first-half playing second fiddle to the home side but recovering to finish on top, albeit without leaving it quite so late to score the decisive goal.

Wigan perhaps should have had more than Lee McCulloch's fine strike to show for their efforts.

The Times

Sherringham's perfect touch

Sheringham may have struggled to make an impact when he has started a game this season, but his team-mates were lacklustre without him in a tepid first half.

A draw may have been a fair result on the balance of play between teams who have broken the mould by establishing themselves in the higher echelons of the top flight at the first attempt after promotion, but a fortunate victory rounded off a rollercoaster eight days for West Ham.

And just for good measure, here is what Sky sports said:

West Ham late show sinks Wigan

West Ham United stole a 2-1 victory in the final seconds of their match with Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

A disappointing game was lit up with goals either side of half time from Lee Mchulloch (45) and Marlon Harewood (52)

That looked to have finished the scoring until Nigel Reo-Coker popped up in injury time to flick Teddy Sherringham's ball past a hapless Mike Pollitt in the Wigan goal.
