Famed cup fighters Hereford United were dumped out of this seasonÂ’s competition by a last minute goal from Wigan's Scott Green in a pulsating tie at Edgar Street.
But the Bulls could certainly count themselves unlucky after more than holding their own against the Nationwide Division Two leaders.
Hereford thought they had taken the lead after 10 minutes when Matt Clarke rifled a shot from Michael Rose's cross past John Filan only for the celebrations to be cut short by a late offside flag.
There was more disappointment for Hereford after 32 minutes when Paul Parry, who continually tested the Wigan defence, cut in from the left and thumped a shot against the woodwork with the rebound falling tantalisingly out of the reach of the Hereford attack.
The Bulls forward line was kept in check a little more in the second period as Wigan came more into the game and it took a brilliant save from Hereford's Matt Baker to keep the scores level in the 62nd minute.
Jason De Vos headed on a corner kick and Neil Roberts hammered in a shot which Baker brilliantly pushed away.
The Bulls continued to press forward and it was rough justice when Green turned Andy Tretton in the dying seconds to thump his shot past Baker.
“Hereford will feel aggrieved they have not won,” admitted Wigan boss Paul Jewell after the game.
“They were a credit to the Conference.
“But we have kept a clean sheet and won the game and to win a game 1-0 away from home you have to be pleased.” Hereford's Matt Clarke was more downbeat.
“We put everything into the game and had the better chances,” he said.
“I think the goal was the only chance they had. But we came out of the game with a lot of credit. They are the best team in the second division but we have done well against them.”
