Wigan clinched the championship with a goalless draw at the McAlpine Stadium against a Huddersfield side still deep in the relegation mire.
Paul Jewell's side turned up the heat late in the second half, but were unable to break down a battling Terriers defence.
In the end it was irrelevant as Crewe were beaten allowing the travelling Wigan fans could celebrate a wonderful season.
Although the Lancashire side couldn't find the breakthrough they did control a scrappy midfield and always kept the home side at arms length.
The first half was evenly balanced with both sides having chances although none were clear-cut.
Wigan's right winger Gary Teale was a constant threat making several blistering runs towards Phil Senior's goal.
But the majority of the game was played out on the midfield with Jon Worthington making his presence felt throughout.
Wigan came out in the second half with more urgency and quickly created a host of good chances.
Teale was in the thick of the action again creating a good chance for Lee McCulloch in the 46th minute but his header flashed wide.
Huddersfield did create chances of their own and for periods even dominated.
Town's top goalscorer Martin Smith, broke through the Latics back line in the 61st minute but he could only manage a weak shot into the side netting.
Wigan did come close to breaking the deadlock when a thunderous 25-yard volley from substitute Peter Kennedy rattled the bar.
But both sides proved unable to get the all breakthrough and it ended goalless.
Jewell was pleased with his team's performance and was delighted they had finally been named champions, commenting: "Our supporters were fantastic and our promotion was well deserved." Town manager Mel Machin was left optimistic about his side's chances of beating the drop.
He said: "If we play like we did today for the remaining three games our prospects are good."
